This Ngai Tahu Shark Tooth Necklace is made from genuine New Zealand greenstone, sourced from Hokitika and made there too.
Each Ngai Tahu necklace comes to you with a special code that you can enter into a website to find out who carved the necklace and see the piece of stone it was carved from. The necklace is beautifully carved from Kawakawa greenstone, and as you can see from the second photo, the colour can vary quite markedly.
The shark tooth pounamu measures approximately 5.2cm (2") long, and is beautifully bound at the top, then has a strong black plaited adjustable cord.
Spiritually, Maori thought of sharks as guardian spirits. In Maori mythology, the Milky Way is the shark Te Mangoroa, placed in the sky by the god Maui. Sea creatures were believed to be the children of the god Punga. Several Maori legends talk of sharks saving them from danger.
So this is a wonderful guardian piece to wear around your neck.
